Visit Ales Stenar

Fifty-nine standing stones on a ridge above the sea. Start at the parking lot and follow the historical trail up to the stones, guided by GPS.

Visit Ales Stenar

Ales Stenar is one of Scandinavia’s most remarkable prehistoric monuments: fifty-nine standing stones set in the shape of a ship, 67 metres long, on a ridge high above the sea. On a clear day you can see the horizon in three directions – all the way to the Danish island of Bornholm. Most visitors are surprised by how much larger the monument is than they expected, and by how quietly it sits in the landscape.

Getting here

Ales Stenar stands on the coast at Kåseberga, about 10 km south-east of Ystad in southern Skåne.

By car: Follow the signs to Kåseberga from the E65. Use the large car park at the entrance to the village – this is the one we recommend. From there, a marked path leads up along the ridge to the stones, about a 10-minute walk.

There is also a small car park down by the harbour, closer to the restaurants and cafés. The path up to the stones from there is shorter, but steep, and can be difficult for some visitors. For most people, the main car park at the entrance is the easier choice.

By public transport: Bus 392 runs between Ystad and KÃ¥seberga. Check current timetables at skanetrafiken.se.

Address for navigation: KÃ¥seberga, 271 75 Ystad

At the site

The stones are free to visit and open at all times. There are no fences and no entrance gates – you walk straight out into the landscape.

The path from the car park takes you along the ridge with the sea behind you and the stones ahead. Give yourself time; the place rewards a calm visit.

There are no facilities at the monument itself. Toilets are located near the car park.

In KÃ¥seberga

The village at the foot of the ridge is worth exploring. There are several cafés and restaurants, and the harbour is famous for its smoked fish – a local speciality from the smokehouses by the water.

Make the most of your visit

The stones are free. The stories behind them are not obvious.

Our audioguide – developed by archaeologist Dr Ylva Sjöstrand – takes you through the site stop by stop and opens up what most visitors walk straight past. All you need is your phone and a pair of headphones.
